Red, White and Tuna

By Jaston Williams, Joe Sears, and Ed Howard. Tuna is a viciously funny excursion into small-town Texas politics, relationships and heated gossip. Portraying matronly ladies, cowboy disc jockeys, hippies and a dozen other memorable characters in the burg of Tuna, Texas, two actors take on the raucous fun of playing multiple roles with quick change fun. In this third edition of the Greater Tuna series, an impending high school reunion brings out the best--and more often the worst--in the citizens of Tuna. Who will be crowned the reunion queen? Nasty spitfire talk among the competitors, whose extravagant opinions are based on rumor and suspicion, stirs up comedic moments that get you chuckling before you realize what's happened. -- Festival Theatre, St. Croix Falls

Proof

By David Auburn. In this story, we meet twenty-five-year-old Catherine who sacrificed college to care for her father (once a brilliant, much-admired mathematician) and is now left in a kind of limbo after his death. Socially awkward and a bit of a shut-in, she is gruff with Hal, a former student who shows up even before the funeral wanting to root through the countless notebooks her father kept in the years of his decline, hoping to find mathematical gold. Then comes Claire, Catherine's cosmopolitan, blandly successful and pushy sister, with plans to sell their father's house and take Catherine with her back to New York. This Pulitzer Prize (2001) and Tony Award-winning (2001) play crackles with subtle wit while tackling large questions. -- Festival Theatre, St. Croix Falls

Jennifer Bolande Exhibition

Jennifer Bolande emerged in the early eighties working first in drawing, dance, performance and choreography. She began working with found pictures, rephotography, collage and installation. In an attempt to integrate aspects of dance and choreography (temporality, gesture, movement, props, theatrical space) with pictures, she began to physicalize the photograph in various ways, constructing images, photo-objects, assemblages, sculptures film and installation. Over the years, Bolande has consistently negotiated between these realms, and has simultaneously worked into the gap between other reductive binary pairs like audience/performer, public/private, masculine/feminine and memory/expectations. -- Inova/Kenilworth Square East, Milwaukee

Theodore Czebotar: Paintings from the Olympic Peninsula

A native of Racine, Theodore Czebotar sketched the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State from the 1940s through the 60s. These studies later inspired larger works of the coastline, temperate rain forests and drier climates found in the area. The artist’s forays into abstraction can be seen in his paintings featuring fallen trees and weathered root clusters. While based on nature, Czebotar painted increasingly reductive and stylized landscapes. In addition to paintings, this exhibition includes photographs of Czebotar and historic images of the Pacific coast. -- Haggerty Museum of Art, Milwaukee

As You Like It

Shakespeare frequently sent his characters into the woods in search of identity, truth and love. In this, one of his greatest comedies, those woods are just one part of a world where rules and labels apply only sporadically and loosely. As You Like It tells the tale of characters living in disguise and in exile in the Forest of Arden. Hilarity ensues, as identities and labels are mistaken and twisted. -- American Players Theatre, Spring Green

All's Well That Ends Well

Some relationships are tricky, and The Bard sets out to remind us of that inconvenient truth via one of theater’s most unconventional heroines, Helena. Fiercely determined to get what she wants (in this case, the almost equally enigmatic Bertram), Helena has quite the bag of tricks, entrapment not least among them. -- American Players Theatre, Spring Green

Another Part of the Forest

So swiftly our theater Up the Hill becomes another place, another era. This time it’s the American South in the wake of the Civil War, where charm belies ill will and where the predatory Hubbards (here in Lillian Hellman's prequel to The Little Foxes) have made a fortune converting national catastrophe into personal wealth. But that story, as it turns out, is only a backdrop to the family battle that plays out among a supremely manipulative father; a beautiful, conniving daughter; two ambitious brothers; and a mother who wants nothing more than to get far away from them all. In its own playful, thrilling, and darkly comic way, Another Part of the Forest gives generously to its audience; after all, characters equally worthy of love and horror, going after each other with gladiatorial rage, surgical precision--and, somehow, charm--can’t help but keep us on the edge of our seats. -- American Players Theatre, Spring Green

Most people know Somerset Maugham for his celebrated novels and stories, but we tend to forget that he was also one of the most popular and important dramatists of his time.
Touchstone Theatre: Waiting for Godot

Does it qualify as irony that a play whose central concern is communication has inspired so much consternation over the years? No matter. Considered by many to be one of, if not the, most influential play of the 20th century, Waiting for Godot asks the big questions in ways few other works of art could: how do we get up every morning, fight through every day, and go to sleep every evening never knowing whether our hopes and dreams might be granted? Godot asks--with theatricality, tension, humor and grace--that we rethink the world and our place within it. -- American Players Theatre, Spring Green

Touchstone Theatre: The Syringa Tree

With very good reason, many of you will see The Syringa Tree simply to witness Colleen Madden playing all 24 of the play’s characters. And, needless to say, you will not be let down: after all, this very combination of script, actor, and director has created near-legendary results in the past, at Milwaukee’s Renaissance Theaterworks. The Syringa Tree takes place against the backdrop of apartheid-era South Africa. It deals in the shame that so often comes with knowledge, the corruption that can belie beauty, and the innocence rarely maintained as we grow up. -- American Players Theatre, Spring Green

Artists John Ruebartsch and Sally Kuzma depict Milwaukee in its long history as a city shaped by immigrants. Waves of diverse Europeans fleeing poverty and oppression once made it the most "foreign" city in America, notes historian John Gurda. In the last 30 years, it has become home to people fleeing violence in places like Southeast Asia and Africa. Here, There, and Elsewhere looks at the experiences of these newer arrivals as they rebuild their lives and communities and become part of 21st century Milwaukee. -- Walker's Point Center for the Arts, Milwaukee

Jared Janovec creates sculptural narratives about the history of the human animal and its evolutionary quest to tame and isolate itself from the wild. His ceramic pieces reference human anatomy and various botanical and organic forms. The artist encapsulates the antagonism between culture and nature through formal contrasts and opposing referents: large and small, wet and dry, light and dark, old and new, ripeness and decay, life and death. The curiosities and contradictions of human invention, discovery and power become fodder for his creations. -- Walker's Point Center for the Arts, Milwaukee
